ABOUT HARJOT BRAR

My main focus is to be about urban settings and street photography. I just like to walk around the city and capture amazing moments. My theme is to shoot urban scenes and city life, I also like to have a story embedded in my city life shots. I also am focusing on using lights in my pictures whether it be city lights or like light painting, and for that reason I take pictures in the night around the city and some in the studio. My process for taking the photographs depends on what I want to take a picture of. For example, I would use a tripod for staged shots or pictures of buildings, where as for street photography, where the shots are of people caught in the action, it will be on the spot, quickly take a picture and move on. My audience most likely is a wide range of people ranging from my classmates to possibly the general public. One of my influences is Joel Meyerowitz. He is possibly one of the most famous “street” photographers and for good reason. He also was an early advocator of color which I want to focus on also. Another influence of mine is Mitja Kobal because he focused on the city also and incorporated the lights of the city into his pictures. I also want to take urban abstract photos that involve reflections like Johnny Savage. He used urban landscapes and turned them abstract by using reflections and using overlapping techniques. Another photographer that influences me is Phil Hatcher. I love the angles he did and what he focused on in his pictures in his London Perspectives project. I also want to take pictures of buildings in the city much like how Phil Hatcher did. One of my other references is Yanidel. I really liked his wide range of colors and point of views he did in his pictures. Also I liked how all of his titles gave a hint to what he saw or how he interpreted the scene. One struggle I have is that since my focus is the city I have trouble getting out there. I don’t always have the time to go out to the city and I also don’t have a car to drive myself. However, I will make the most out of it when I do get the chance of going to the city. Because of that and also as a student I have a certain viewpoint with these limitations to the photographs I take for the time being.
